Measures for Adaptation to Climate Change in Rajasthan

A study funded by, Department for International Development (DFID) on Measures for Adaptation to Climate Change in Rajasthan was taken up which focussed on the traditional adaptation practices and coping measures by the vulnerable communities in a drought prone area in Rajasthan.

Environmental & Social Reporting Formats for VSBK entrepreneurs:

To improve the environmental and social performance of the brick sector, DA and TARA have devised a novel method to utilise carbon credits to incentives compliance to laws thereby improving environmental performance and make owners socially responsible by ensuring provision of social security for workers. In the project, TARA will facilitate installation of 126 VSBKs in the four states of Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Rajasthan. The carbon emission reductions achieved from bundled kilns will be monetized in the form of Certified Emission Reductions to be sold to the Community Development Carbon Fund of the World Bank.

Greenhouse Gas Pollution Prevention Project - Climate Change Supplement

The Greenhouse Gas Pollution Prevention (GEP) project was launched by The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in 1995 to help India increase the efficiency of its coal fired power plants and promote year round co-generation in sugar industry. The GEP programme was expanded into Climate Change Supplement (GEP-CCS) in 1999 in order to focus upon :

  • Developing human and institutional capacity to design and implement policies and projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Increasing technical co-operation between Indian and U.S. entities to reduce GHG emissions
  • Creating public-private partnerships to reduce GHG emissions
  • Attracting and channelling private and international financing into clean energy technologies, etc.

The GEP-CCS project is being co-ordinated by the Louis Berger Group Inc., a consulting company from Washington D.C. and with its project office in New Delhi. The project is mainly being carried out by Climate Change Centre, Development Alternatives.

Climate Change Outreach and Awareness Programme

Climate Change Outreach and Awareness Programme being carried out at Development Alternatives and a few other organisations is a programme of United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This programme seeks to strengthen local institutions so that they can better understand and participate in the global debate on climate change. USAID is also assisting local institutions become better providers of information on climate change so that their constituents can participate more fully in capturing the benefits from upcoming programmes and mechanisms addressing climate change. The other institutions involved in this programme are Confederation of Indian Industries (CII); Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad; Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI); Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) and Credit Rating Information Services India Ltd. (CRISIL).

Activities carried out under this programme

  • Research on baseline and additionality issues
  • Sustainable development as an integral component of Climate Change Mitigation Projects (CCMPs)
  • Organised Roundtable and Workshops for awareness generation among the stakeholders
  • Organised workshops for Climate Change Mitigation Project Development in the Decentralized Energy and Building Materials sectors

Southern Perspective of Climate Change : India

A status report in nature this research project aims at bringing out the "Southern Perspective" of Climate Change to US public, media and policy makers. The audience for this report is the international community. Its purpose is to inform that developing countries are already implementing climate policies and are not the free riders in the climate change regime. Developed countries are this way informed on the ongoing activities in the developing world.
