IDRC Ecohealth project
Cleaner Production in Electroplating industry
Development
Alternatives identified financially and environmentally feasible option
for improving the work plan environment and effluent characteristics. Best
practices including the cleaner technology adoption were implemented to
reduce water, electricity and chemical consumption and thereby prevent
pollution at the source itself. IDRC Ecohealth project Under support from International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada the health risks associated with stone crushing units are sought to be assessed and managed using the eco-health framework. To assess the feasibility of doing this, a pilot study of 5 months duration was designed. The objectives of the pilot phase were three-fold, viz. (i) Improvement in understanding of the industry operations & dynamics, (ii) Stakeholder identification & engagement, to understand their positions and needs, and (iii) Developing and refining the research processes. Environmental & energy performance benchmarking and policy workshops for VSBK (Jharkhand and Chattisgarh), ICEF (Indo-Canada Environment Facility) DA has been working towards pollution reduction and energy efficiency in brick industry. DA has carried out environmental monitoring activities for the purpose of performance evaluation. DA has conducted policy influence workshops in the states of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. DA has also been investing in training programmes for fire masters as a technical backup support to enable kilns to achieve the best results. The best achieved results till date by various entrepreneurs are taken as benchmark to motivate other kiln owners and influence policy of fired brick sector at state level Environmental & Social Reporting Formats for VSBK entrepreneurs: To improve the environmental and social performance of the brick sector, DA and TARA have devised a novel method to utilise carbon credits to incentives compliance to laws thereby improving environmental performance and make owners socially responsible by ensuring provision of social security for workers. In the project, TARA will facilitate installation of 126 VSBKs in the four states of Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Rajasthan. The carbon emission reductions achieved from bundled kilns will be monetized in the form of Certified Emission Reductions to be sold to the Community Development Carbon Fund of the World Bank. Better Environmental Sustainability Targets (BEST) programme DA is working towards improving the lead acid battery (LAB) sector under the Better Environmental Sustainability Targets (BEST) programme. DA in collaboration with Occupational Knowledge International (OKI) and National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning India (NRCLPI) is working with a diverse group of stakeholders to develop a comprehensive environmental standard for lead battery manufacturing plants. UNEP, IFC has committed funds for conducting multi- stakeholder consultation meetings for refinement of the proposed standard. Ewaste management DA is working closely with the Secretariat of Basel Convention (SBC) in formulating the programme on partnership approach of e-waste management in India. DA presented a multistakeholder partnership approach, elaborating the role that NGOs can play in response to the global threat of e-waste in the Asia-Pacific Inception Workshop on Environmentally Sound Management of Electronic and Electrical Wastes in Tokyo from November 2005 organized by the Government of Japan in co operation with the Secretariat of Basel Convention and National Institute of Environmental Studies, Japan. ISO 14001:2004 in Sanskriti School DA successfully facilitated revisions in the Environment Management System, confirming to ISO 14001:2004 in Sanskriti School, Delhi. Cleaner
Production in Brick Industry
Environmental and Social Policy and Procedures The
project consisted of formulating environmental and social policy and
procedures, and outlining the organisational support required to implement
the procedures. The purpose and aim of the ESPP is to provide the
institution an overall framework to guide it in the identification,
assessment and management of environmental and social concerns at both
organisational as well as project level. The ESPP was prepared for Power
Corporation of India Limited (PGCI) and Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure
Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL). | ||
