T
he first step in this
endeavour was at Datia, Madhya Pradesh on 240 acres of barren
hilly areas, which were literally devoid of any vegetation. This
was followed by treating 150 acres of saline/sodic wastelands in the same district. These two projects highlighted the
need to
increase the agricultural productivity along with wasteland
development. Thus work on soil and moisture conservation,
increasing fertility of soils by tropical legumes and water
harvesting structures was initiated in 10 villages of Datia
district.
| The success of these
programmes clearly revealed that even if the forestry /
agriculture
resource of the region could be harnessed fully in

years,
we could at best provide
sustainable livelihoods
to 30-40% of our rural
population. This was a clear pointer that
we had to provide income generation /
employment avenues to the
60-70% of
the rural population without which rural
development
would be incomplete.
Establishment of TARAgram
was the
logical start towards creating sustainable
livelihoods. |
