"If my people are wiped out, you must destroy all photos
of
us," said Chief Davi Yanomami in 1990, "because
future
generations will be too ashamed at such a crime
against humanity."
Made to mark the 500th anniversary
of the arrival in the New World of
Christopher Columbus,
this haunting three parts series from veteran
anthropological film-maker Brian Moser chronicles over
half a century of
such crimes, from the 1913
extermination of the Ona people of Tierra del Fuego
|
|
to the massacre of 40,000 Q’Eqchi
Indians by special
units of the Guatemalan army firing the 1980s. Subdued
by arms and subjugated by religion over five dark
centuries, Moser shown
how American Indians today -
from Canada to Colombia - are reclaiming
their history,
their culture and their land.

Songs and Tears of Nature

An old Saami woman from the Arctic tells a story of the
world where
there are no reindeer, no fish and no
trees. Camilo, a Fluni-o from
north-east Brazil, imagines
"a world covered in gold paved in crystal
- with rivers of
milk, lagoons of honey and oceans of port wine". For
centuries the Saami and the Fulni-o have shared the
same vision of a world
where man and the environment
are inextricably linked. By contrasting
their songs and
stories, Cesar Paes’ stunning documentary illustrated
the strengths and wisdom of their individual cultures. "A
good story
is like a mountain," the old Saami woman
concludes. "It gives
you a certain perspective on things
- you see things in a different
light."
