“Working for
technological empowerment and sustainable livelihoods at the
grassroots level” is a strategic objective of the Department
of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India’s
“Science and Society Programme” that is shared by Development
Alternatives. As a partner institution, Development
Alternatives received core support from DST for over a decade
to build capacity for development of technology packages that
address basic needs and provide livelihood opportunities to
women and weaker sections of society.
The highly
successful TARA BALRAM and TARA Handloom packages were an
outcome of this collaboration. Current projects focus on
innovation in the areas of briquetted biomass fuel, paper
recycling for schools and community groups and improved
agricultural practices. The “Udyamita Suvidha Kendra”, an
enterprise incubator for rural women has been launched in
Datia, M.P. with DST support. Development Alternatives has
been a regular participant in institutional processes set up
by the Science and Society Division to enhance the impact of
S&T interventions on the rural poor. |
