Decentralised Renewable Electricity Brings Cheer in
the Lives of Rural Entrepreneurs

TARAurja electricity takes dhaabas to the next level

Jagram was fascinated with food ever since he grew up and took it up professionally in 2005. He owns and runs a dhabba in Shivpura village of Balrampur district, which serves more than 200 customers a day. He lives in a joint family in the same village with 15 other members. Apart from his dhabba, Jagram also runs a photo studio and a cycle shop in the same village for enhancing his income. He has been a TARAurja day time (10:00 to 19:00 hours) customer since 2015.

When TARA offered him a business expansion idea and asked him to use a juicer cum lassi machine, he enthusiastically accepted the offer. "I am always keen to try different business ideas for enhancing my profits", says Jagram. He is keen to transform from coal based cooking to biomass pellet based cooking methods. He has subscribed to the three monthly power packages – 15W package for Rs.120 (lighting load), 350W package for Rs.1800 (deep freezer) and 250W for Rs.600 (juicer). "I am constantly in search of innovative ideas to expand my business and am thinking of putting more equipment and appliances like a coffee machine and television set to keep my customers engaged and loyal", says Jagram.

As against his previous profit of Rs. 10,000; he is now able to secure Rs. 13,000 with addition of one more worker. Jagram also witnessed increased number of customers, which has reflected in his monthly revenue increase. Currently, he is able to sell 30 glasses of juice and lassi at Rs.20/glass. "My customers are contented to get delicious and chilled juice and lassi in such hot weather, which has improved my position in the juice segment", says Jagram. He is happy to be associated with TARA Urja as his business is more profitable since he can operate for longer duration in the evening; "I am glad to see "ronak" (meaning brightness or larger footfall) in my dhabba these days", says Jagram.

DRE helps a rural tailor expand his business

Sandeep, a highly inspired entrepreneur, resident of Shivpura village, always wanted to become a tailor. He lives in a joint family with five brothers and one sister. His brothers are also into running businesses such as a grocery shop, shoe shop and mobile shop, but, they have not subscribed to TARAurja electricity. Sandeep is the first one in the family to opt for TARAurja electricity because he wanted to work for extra hours and scale up his business. "I want to expand my business and start a tailoring school with advanced machines. This will not only enhance my productivity, but will also position my brand name", says Sandeep. He is a skilled entrepreneur and has studied various design and fashion trends. He even went to Maharashtra a couple of times for identification and validation of advanced technologies.

Recently, he lost his wife and child. He gradually recovered from this deep personal loss and stood strong to fulfill his dream of making his brand name – ‘Sandeep-Raj’ famous (Raj being his son’s name). "I want to export my clothes and designs to Arab countries", says Sandeep.

TARA has supported him with a motor which helped him to prepare more number of items in a day. Earlier, he used to make 5 pants and 10 shirts and now he can easily make 6 pants and 13 shirts because of evening electricity and a motorised stitching machine. This has also reflected in his income.

Currently, five people work in his shop who handle different operations like cutting, pico, sewing, designing, etc. As of now, he makes kids and men’s wear, but from August onwards, he will start stitching and designing ladies suits, shirts, pants, petticoats, children’s’ clothes and wedding clothes.

He is confident enough to claim that within a period of 1 year the brand will be famous and everyone will know of it. "Ek baar naam ban jaye, kaam apne aap aa jata hain", says Sandeep. q
