One World Education Centre
A UNIQUE PRIVATE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
                                                 By  SK Sharma

To meet the increasing demand, private education trusts are now establishing colleges all over India. Often, they are set up in isolation at inappropriate locations depriving students of an academic environment and synergy with other disciplines.
Inspired by the concept of India Habitat Centre, One World Education Centre is an initiative to develop private university campuses of excellence in various cities and villages. Private trusts can book space to set up colleges in diverse disciplines creating a mutually supportive academic environment. The university shall impart education based on India’s rich cultural ethos and its relevance today for realising a sustainable world order based on ethics and respect for all cultures. The first such campus is being developed in Noida.

Education trusts are invited to book space for schools such as in public, economic, and business management, media, social work, and technical and design disciplines, facilitating learning through interactive processes.

The university will establish facilities for distance learning through internet and television channels. Graduate programmes in science and humanities can also be offered. To optimise use of infrastructure, night classes can be considered.

New Delhi, May 2004 Development Alternatives

1

Location : Prime 12 hectares (30 acres) site in Noida Institutional Area on Hapur Highway seven kilometres from Delhi border with large residential area available in Gaziabad on the opposite side of Hapur highway.

2

The Concept : The campus will be developed with common facilities such as auditorium, theatre, seminar rooms, resource centre, guest house, student shops, food courts and sports suiting a university environment. It will be self financing developed through contributions collected from promoters that book space for various faculties.

3

Management : Registered as a society, CMD HUDCO shall be its ex officio Patron. Shri SK Sharma shall be its founder President in overall charge of its administration. Since he has conceptualised the One World Education Centre it is important that he coordinates it in its formative years.

4

Motto of the University : Einstein was the man of the second millennium, Gandhi the apostle of the third. Science tempered with spirituality alone can nurture a just world order. The motto of the University shall be "Science & Spirituality for a just World Order". The long term objective of society should be to attain high levels of spiritual development. Technology can change life styles but not necessarily the quality of human existence.

5

Theme Pavilion : The University shall have a theme pavilion "Gyan Vigyan Darshan" (Spirituality Science Experience). Through visuals and multimedia projections the exposition will project India’s rich cultural and spiritual ethos and its relevance today for moderating science, capitalism and consumerism. It will collate the methods advocated by various faiths for self development, and the features in some for optimising societal ethics.

6

Sustainability Management : An International Institute for Sustainable Management promoted by Development Alternatives will address issues such as ongoing social, environmental and political degradation, violence, global warming, and stress on the need of true egalitarian democracy with empowered local governments.
7 Plastic & Performing Arts : Promoters are invited to set up colleges in creative arts such as classical and modern singing, dancing, theatre, painting, graphic arts, sculpture, photography and computer art. Such programmes will enrich the campus and sensitise others to various arts forms. We invite well wishers to support development of clusters based on guru-shishya parampara that nurtured our rich culture since ages.
8

School of Vedic Sciences : Promoters are invited to set up a School of Vedic Sciences with faculties such as rajnitikshastra (dharma of the state), arthashastra (dharma of business), ayurveda (medicine), vastushastra (regional planning), vastu (orientation of buildings), jyotish (astrology). Students of architecture and engineering can take electives in vastushastra and/or vastu and use it in conjunction with modern planning and architecture. Most families seek advice of astrologers for ceremonies such as marriage and setting up business enterprises. In view of the market demand, private universities need to grant degrees in such disciplines so that the community does not suffer at the hands of quacks. The school may also offer courses in Indian languages. Students of all colleges can take these as elective courses.

9

Campus Design & Architecture : One World Education Centre is an attempt to create an informal academic environment in which students of science and humanities especially arts, have opportunity to interact and discover their latent potentials. The centre will nurture close student-faculty interaction and counselling for sound self development. The built form shall be such as to create an informal environment. Sensitive religious thinkers, architects, artists and scholars may be associated in specialised studies.HUDCO will procure the land on the other side of Hapur highway for faculty housing, student hostels and sports fields. A cluster based on guru-shishya parampara may also be developed.

10 Collaboration : IEC will collaborate with Indian and foreign universities on (a) IEC advising on Gyan that is spirituality for nurturing an egalitarian society, and (b) seeking advice on Vigyan that is science for sustainability.
11 Invitation to Participate : Philanthropists, business houses, social organisations and individuals interested in participating in this unique project are invited to get in touch with us. Those interested will have to apply for built space based on their need. If their proposal is approved, they will be required to deposit the amount in instalments based on the progress of the development of the campus. If they need, HUDCO can offer them loan finance. We invite NRIs to support this initiative.
12 Promoting One World Education Centres : Based on the experience gained, HUDCO can support development of similar One World Education Centres in other cities and villages of India, and on franchise in other nations.   q
