Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg of Norway, along with his External Affairs officials visited the Community Solar Power Plant in village Rampura (Jhansi District) on February 4, 2010, to mark the ongoing upscaling of a solar energy rural electrification project jointly financed by Norway and India

l On February 3, 2010, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) team updated Development Alternatives on the shift in the focus of SDC mission in India towards Climate change adaptation (CCA)

l CLAP for Himachal conducted its first two orientation workshops for potential implementation partners in the districts of Bilaspur and Solan, where a total of 24 short listed NGOs participated in the events

l Training programmes were conducted by TLA in Bundelkhand on Training on Planning and Orientation of TARA Karigar Mandal Legalisation on February 16, 2010, and Security Guards at Lalitpur on February 16-20, 2010

l TARA Livelihoods Academy inaugurated a tailoring centre at Village Sarmau, Pahuj, under the Vocational Training Provider (VTP) programme on February 2, 2010

l The Carbon Neutrality Assessment Framework’ at the Gram Panchayat level has been finalised in consultation with the Government of Himachal Pradesh

l A workshop on ‘Capacity Building Programme for Trade Union Leaders in the Construction Industry’ was conducted by the V.V. Giri National Labour Institute in Noida, from February 8 to 12, 2010. From the Development Alternatives Group, Vrinda Chopra and Taheer Syed attended the workshop which has brought together various trade union leaders from different parts of the country to build capacities in order to better support the construction workers. There were discussion on welfare schemes, current problems of the construction workers and how to alleviate them, and leadership skills

l The first rural song competition in Bundelkhand, called Bundeli Idol 2010, was held in Orchha, Jhansi. Out of 195 contestants, 6 finalists were short listed for the grand finale by three experts in regional folk music. The three winners gave a wonderful performance before an audience of more than 400 people. The competition has widened the interest in Bundelkhand folk music, providing an opportunity for the rural people to showcase their talent

l The forthcoming Lok Awaas Yatra will be held from March 26 to 30, 2010 in the eastern regions of India covering Bihar and Orissa. This Yatra will conclude in a regional seminar at Patna on March 30, 2010 that will identify the key enablers for enhancing the quality of rural habitat in the region

l Practical Action – Nepal and Practical Action – Bangladesh, working with the underprivileged communities to develop appropriate technologies in food production, energy, transport, shelter and disaster mitigation are the latest members of the basin-South Asia Regional Platform. At present, the platform has 16 members from different parts of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka
