Since its inception in 1982, The DA Group has pioneered the concept of a sustainable development enterprise in its own design and structure - a new model for not-for-profit corporations that combines social objectives with business-like methods. DA’s belief in enterprise and the utility of the market has led to the establishment of its own green businesses, designed to take low carbon, resource efficient pathways to inclusive growth in areas such as rural housing, renewable energy, water management, sustainable agriculture, waste management and recycling from local to global scale. Since the inception of DA in 1982, Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA) has been incubating micro-enterprise based decentralised models, aimed at providing home building services, pure water, light, clean cooking solutions and a range of income generating opportunities to the poor. The TARAhaat Information and Marketing Services Pvt. Ltd. creates micro-franchises to deliver IT-enabled education and skill building products to young job seekers. TARA Machines and Tech Services Pvt. Ltd. promotes sustainable technology solutions for small and medium enterprises. TARAenviro is set up to market cutting-edge products to save water and other vital planetary resources. DESI Power Pvt. Ltd. promotes biomass energy based “EmPower” models for rural electrification and enterprise creation. These entities have become the object of attention for green investors and social venture funds. The extent to which the DA Group’s social enterprises have made a portfolio of development services available to poverty stricken communities, can be seen in the Bundelkhand area of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, where an oppressive social structure and extreme environmental degradation have held back development for decades. The hubs of these activities are the TARAgram development resource centres at Orchha, Pahuj and Datia that support environmental and social value creation in over 150 villages across the region.
