    Job Description :-

    The social scientist will be based in Ireland & India, employed to carry out an analysis of the social, political, economic and environmental context of drinking and wastewater use, needs and vulnerability in the three specific communities - urban, peri-urban and rural in India.  The post is funded by the Water for our Environment Economy and Society (SC5-12-2018: EU-India water co-operation) Horizon 2020 programme. The PANI WATER consortium represents a collaboration of world-renowned universities, research centres/ organisations and SMEs. The exchange of expertise and knowledge amongst PANI WATER partners is designed to lead to a unified goal of effectively and efficiently translating innovative and affordable solar-driven point-of-use water treatment technologies to end-users in vulnerable communities in the future. The social science component of PANIWATER is led by MUSSI working in partnership with Development Alternatives (DEVALT) in India. Development Alternatives (DA) is a research and action organisation striving to deliver socially equitable, environmentally sound and economically scalable development outcomes. Their green technology innovations for habitat, water, energy and waste management, which deliver basic needs and generate sustainable livelihoods, have reduced poverty and rejuvenated natural ecosystems in the most backward regions of India.

    The successful candidate will be appointed to work on the social science component of the programme based at MUSSI (deployed to partner location in New Delhi), which seeks to accelerate the social sustainability impact of drinking water disinfection units and demo/pilot plants set up to recycle sewage for agricultural use in a rural, peri-urban, and urban setting in India. The objectives are to: 

    1. Build an integrated understanding and a profound analysis of the social, political, economic and environmental context of water use, needs and vulnerability in the three specific communities - urban, peri-urban and rural. 
    2. Assess the water vulnerability and needs of pre-specified communities through a base-line socio-economic survey.  The resulting data will be mapped using GPS and GIS tools. 
    3. Identify the relevant governance practices & policies that potentially impact water resources, and in particular the use of technologies for point-of-use drinking water treatment in the pre-specified communities and the sustainability of waste water treatment plants in the context of depleting  resources and changing Climatic conditions.
    4. Examine the effect of gender relations on domestic, local and national governance of water resources, on local and household decision-making and on the management and uptake of the benefits of treatment technologies for drinking and wastewater.
    5. Build capacity of local actors to engage in equitable and sustainable governance structures and practices by assessing and advising in the three intervention sites.

    Desirable Attributes :-

    The successful candidate will:

    • hold a doctoral degree (PhD) in Sociology, Anthropology or Human Geography, Environmental planning or a related social science discipline; 
    • have a proven affinity with sustainable development research, especially concerning inequalities, governance, conflict and policy issues;
    • have a proven expertise in quantitative research methods, preferably also in GIS;
    • have interest in and experience with multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research approaches;
    • have published or the capacity to publish in international scientific journals;
    • have report writing skills
    • be well connected to relevant academic partners as well as to stakeholders in society;
    • have excellent communication skills and be a team player.

    Through this advertisement, DA Group is looking for an anchor for policy research and communication  in  Climate Change resilience  sector who will lead an ambitious effort to advance the organization’s agenda by disseminating our work and message to a wide variety of stakeholders nationwide, including researchers, policymakers, practitioners, institutions of higher education.
    This will involve:
    1. Research and analysis on Climate Change adaptation, NRM, Climate Finance
    2. Communication and advocacy on issues of Paris Agreement, SDGs, NDCs, GCF and other international climate policy processes

    4.     Technical Skills :
    • Experienced in technical report writing and presentation.
    • Good working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), excellent editing & presentation skills, Functional knowledge of GIS would be desirable.
    • Organizational Skills: Independent thinker, analytical, written and verbal communication skills, especially in English.
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment, balance multiple competing priorities, and operate on short timelines. 
    Specifically, the incumbent should have:
    • Experience of working in development sectors / Government departments, towards addressing the rural livelihood issues, sustainable use of natural resources & connecting it to the larger global climate policy
