Indian Micro Enterprises Development Foundation (IMEDF)


Indian Micro Enterprises Development Foundation (IMEDF) is the social enterprise development vehicle of the Development Alternatives Group. Registered as a Section 8 Company under the Companies Act, 2013, it was set up to boost an ecosystem for green and inclusive entrepreneurship. IMEDF promotes and supports enterprise models through:

  • Transfer and adaptation of innovative technology-based business models
  • Provision of credit and finance linkages for entrepreneurs
  • Capacity building through technical skill building for business planning and operations
  • Integration and mainstreaming of products and services into local and high-value markets
  • Collaboration with institutions for cluster development

IMEDF works closely with the public sector, the private sector, and civil society organisations to develop systematic and collaborative initiatives for sustainable business development at scale. It was registered as a nodal agency of the Ministry of MSME, Government of India for the development of clusters under the Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI) on 24 October, 2017.

IMEDF has grown into a unique nodal agency by catering to more than one sector (handloom & handicrafts, medicinal plants, NTFP sector, artefacts sector, natural dye sector, and gold and services sector). Today IMEDF has achieved the following milestones:

  • A total of 29 clusters sanctioned under SFURTI in 12 Indian states
  • The sum of SFURTI grant allocated and being managed by IMEDF stands at INR 924 million till 31 March, 2022.
  • These clusters have supported 21,136 artisans and farmers, out of which 8775 are women.
  • Collaborated with 42 partners (including grassroots organisations and technical experts) to incubate the 29 clusters
  • Four clusters have been developed in the country’s north-east region
  • Six clusters are dedicated to women artisans and farmers
  • Six clusters are in tribal areas and eight others are in aspirational districts
