Paper
Recycling Unit
– Chetanalaya, Jahangirpuri
Chetanalaya
is an organisation working for sustainable and inclusive development of
rag pickers in Jahangirpuri. It began running a development project
along these lines with the start of a Paper Recycling Unit in August
2012.
The idea was to bring
about an occupational shift in the lives of these people, to wean them away from rag picking and establish
them firmly in a more dignified way of earning a living. Seven members
of the community were selected to run a unit for the production of
recycled paper and making finished products out of it. These men were
trained by TARA Machines and Tech Services Pvt Ltd on the TARA PaperMek
recycling package, and provided hands-on training in operating the
machinery. These training sessions polished the skills of the team
members. With this help they were able to
manufacture a range of finished products like envelopes, folders, carry
bags, pen holders, drawing sheets etc. These finished paper products
have been priced between Rs 2 for an envelope to Rs 28 for a large carry
bag. Although the usage of recycled paper products in India is still in
its infancy, the attractive quality of products made by these men has
brought the unit some very encouraging returns. Today they are not only
away from the health hazards of rag picking but lead dignified lives in
a productive environment. These people have shown that transformation is
possible in the life style of the community and at the same time became
front runners for environment protection.

Paper Recycling Unit
– Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd
Power Grid
Corporation of India Ltd (PGC), a Navratna Public Sector Undertaking (PS U)
is committed to the goal of sustainable development and conservation of
nature and natural resources. As part of its sustainable development
initiative, PGC established its flagship venture ‘Waste Paper Recycling
Plant’ on the premises of 400 / 220 kV GIS Substation on Sohna Road,
Gurgaon. The waste paper recycling unit was supplied and installed by
TARA Machines and Tech Services Pvt Ltd. It has the capacity to handle
40-60 kg of paper daily. The waste paper generated in the PGC Corporate
Office is used as raw material for the plant. The recycled paper
produced in-house is now utilised for making company’s letterheads,
visiting cards, file, folders, DO pads etc. The aim is phasing out all
procurement of paper from outside in due course of time.
This work of recycling waste paper generated from the PGC Corporate
office has not only been contributing towards environment protection for
last nine months but also provided employment to 5 persons (including 4
female workers) from a poor section of the society. Encouraged by its
success, PGC would like to replicate this model plant in their other
offices at different regional centres in the near future.
