Background
Development Alternatives (DA)
launched the Delhi Environment Action Network (DEAN)
programme in 1996. DEAN is a part of the nationwide Community Led
Environment Action Network (CLEAN) programme. The programme
emphasises environmental education among school children as a means
of promoting environmental awareness and action among citizens of
Delhi. Currently, DEAN is anchored by 600 students from 12 schools
spread over different parts of Delhi. Besides sponsorship by
Development Alternatives, the programme is supported by the Ministry
of Science and Technology, Central Pollution Control Board and the
Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.
As a part of the programme, school
children have been trained in monitoring and assessing the
environmental quality of selected areas using field testing kits
such as the J al-TARA
Water Testing Kit developed by Development Alternatives. Now that it
is about a year since the programme was initiated and students have
adequate information on the quality of environment, especially the
water quality from different sources for three seasons, we feel the
time is appropriate for initiating action for improvement of the
environment based on the available information.
About The
Mela
Prior to initiating the action phase
of the programme, DA is organising a DEAN Mela on the 16 th
and 17th January, 1998
at National Stadium, Opp. India Gate, New Delhi. The purpose
of the Mela will be to provide an opportunity for children to
express their feelings and concern about the deteriorating
environmental conditions in the city. Students will also
demonstrate a variety of solutions for improvement of the
environment. The citizens of Delhi need to be more aware of
their city’s environmental status and encouraged to initiate
environmental improvement action.
