Thirty-five-year-old Jaina Bai Uike is a resident of village Gunwant Nagar, Athner Block in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh. She is married and has two sons and three daughters. Her husband Mishri Lal works as a labourer and they are all living below the poverty line.

On the opening of TARA Akshar centre in her village on July 9, 2007, Jaina Bai became interested in learning when she came to know from her friends that TARA Akshar teaches Hindi with modern techniques in just 30 days. One of the students of the centre informed Maya Aarse, the instructor who then informed Neeraj Chaudhary, a Master Trainer. Neeraj Chaudhary, in turn, met Jaina Bai and her family members.

On August 17, 2007, the second teaching cycle commenced in Gunwant Nagar. Jaina Bai joined the centre. Her performance steadily improved and in no time she was way ahead of her fellow students. In her exam conducted on September 24, 2007, she passed with flying colours. Jaina Bai can now read and write Hindi. Her confidence level has increased tremendously and she is very happy with her new image as a literate woman and now wants the same for her children.

After becoming a TARA Akshar graduate, Jaina Bai was elected as a Sarpach. She is performing her duties very effectively and efficiently. She is very thankful to TARA Akshar and Naman Sewa Samiti for increasing her confidence level and her image as a Sarpanch.

Kanta Bai, aged 42 years, is a resident of village Dori in Betul District of Madhya Pradesh. Her right leg was affected by polio when she was 2 years old. Since then, she is unable to walk properly. Her husband, Bhaddu Lal, who is also affected by polio, has a small shop. They have one son and five daughters. Their eldest daughter is a TARA Akshar student. The family lives below the poverty line.

When a TARA Akshar centre opened near her village Dori on August 17, 2007, Kanta Bai became interested in learning Hindi in just 30 days. She met Sunil Patil, the instructor, and expressed her desire to learn Hindi. She joined the TARA Akshar centre on August 17, 2007 and started learning very diligently.

Her performance improved and she cleared her exams on the very first attempt. Her husband and other family members are very happy and are very thankful to TARA Akshar. Kanta Bai’s confidence level has increased tremendously and she is very happy to be known as a literate woman.

Name : Prema Devi

Prema Devi, aged 28 years, is a resident of village Bhaismari in Hameerpur District of Uttar Pradesh. She and her husband Ram Dev work as labourers. Prema Devi has a 3-year-old son. Her complete family is illiterate and they are living below the poverty line. On getting the news of the opening of Tara Akshar centre in her village, Prema Devi came to know from her friends that TARA Akshar teaches Hindi to complete illiterates in just 30 days.

On June 8, 2007, the second teaching cycle commenced in Bhaismari. Prema Devi started studying and her performance was exemplary and in no time she was way ahead of her fellow students. Prema Devi cleared her exams on the very first attempt on July 13, 2007. Prema Devi was so grateful to Tara Akshar that she herself wrote a letter of thanks to TARA Akshar.

The over whelming enthusiasm and the interest generated by Tara Akshar compelled Prema Devi her to take the literacy movement forward in her own little way and she has now started teaching small children of her neighborhood. Presently, in the evenings, she is teaching 20 children who have picked up a few alphabets. The parents of these children are paying her Rs 10.00 per month. Indal Prasad, Master Trainer, visited her while she was taking the class and he was highly impressed with the spirit and enthusiasm with which she was moving ahead. Prema Devi has requested for some stationery, etc., which is being sent to her. The entire village is impressed with Prema Devi and she has emerged as a role model not only for the women but for everyone in and around her village.

Sixteen-year-old Reena is a resident of village Karheda in Mewat district of Haryana. Her both legs were affected by polio. Unable to walk, Reena uses her hands to move around. Her father Karamchand is a shepherd.

On June 7, 2007, with the help of the S. M. Sehgal Foundation, a TARA Akshar centre commenced in Karheda village. Reena came to know from Kamlesh, an instructor, that this programme teaches Hindi in just 30 days. Reena was very keen to learn to read and write. Kamlesh informed Razia, the Quality Controller and they met Reena and her family members.

On July 25, 2007, the second teaching cycle commenced in Karheda. Reena joined the centre and soon excelled in her studies. During the rainy season, Reena’s clothes would get ruined with mud and slush as she struggled to come to the class but she continued every day.

Reena cleared her exam on August 19, 2007. Reena can now read and write Hindi. Her confidence level has increased tremendously and she is very happy being literate. She gives the following message to other girls of her village:
