DAINET NGO Directory : Connecting People

Development Alternatives Information Network has published a series of NGO Directories.  A review of the same is presented below.

Those who believe in Sustainable Development with people being the nucleus, also realize this fact that none of the umpteen actors engaged in the field of development could work in their individual ivory towers - if they are keen to reach out to the man (or woman) living in the mud hut. It is vital to interact with each other all the time not just to learn lessons from the field-experiences but also to avoid mushrooming and duplication of developmental activities.

Development, in the real sense of the term, could only fructify once we create communication bridges to link people - especially those working at the grassroots.

To build such a communication bridge, Development Alternatives Information Network (DAINET) has published a series of NGO directories to facilitate sustainable development efforts at the micro as well as macro level.

The DAINET NGO Directory series provides reliable and factual information on 3700 NGOs spread across the subcontinent.  These numerous NGOs are working at different levels of advocacy, planning, execution and monitoring of the numerous developmental activities taking place all over India.

The Directory is presented in 15 volumes, covering various states and regions.  Each volume profiles between 150 - 300 NGOs.  Apart from the financing and staffing details, the NGO profile includes the aims and activities of the organisation per se, along with its target groups.  Probably, the key element for forging new partnerships is the information on the products and services which the NGOs offer and require.  All the NGOs figuring in the DAINET Directory have indicated their keen interest in collaborating with other partners in the development arena.

The DAINET NGO Directory has been successful in creating an information network to link various government agencies, industrial groups, research bodies as well as national and international donor agencies engaged in promoting sustainable development.  One positive outcome of such a venture is building up synergies between the different actors of development, which could certainly pave the way towards addressing the grassroots problems in a more effective manner.      q
